El 12 de julio participé en la preconferencia «Emotions and Journalism in today’s dynamic communication landscape» organizada por @IAMCR en la Facultad de Artes y Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad Nacional de Singapur 🇸🇬. Organized by María T. Soto-Sanfiel (cnmmtss@nus.edu.sg) and Virpi Salojärvi (virpi.salojarvi@helsinki.fi)

In my presentation, “Navigating (Un)safety in Ecuadorian Journalism (2021–2023)”, I explored how emotions—particularly fear, precarity, and self-censorship—intertwine with the conditions of insecurity and disinformation faced by journalists working in contexts shaped by structural violence and media capture.
Drawing on data from 395 journalists, the findings show that peripheral journalists face more precarious conditions, are ideologically more diverse, and report higher exposure to surveillance, discrediting, and digital attacks.
Key findings:
🔹 33.7% reported exposure to hate or demeaning speech
🔹 19.8% suffered public discrediting
🔹 15.1% experienced hacking
🔹 6.7% faced physical attacks
The study sheds light on how professional vs. peripheral profiles experience risk differently, and how emotional and material insecurity shape journalistic practices.

🧠💬 Emotions, polarization, and digital storytelling are increasingly interconnected. Grateful to the organizers for such an inspiring and meaningful space.
